I am using Jeffrey Smart as my guide here. I saw Jeffrey's portrait of Clive James, the man who made an art of film criticism, with the figure of Clive occupying a tiny portion of the painting. I saw a fisherman in a hi-viz windcheater standing on the edge of the peir and visible through the opening in the shelter. I felt no inclination to ask him to stand so that he was in the centre of the opening and decided that the remainder of the image should lack symmetry.
